What was to become New York state was the scene of nearly a third of the battles fought in the American Revolution,

New Yorkers saw the christening of the American flag when the Stars and Stripes was first flown in battle at the defense of Ft. Stanwix in Rome.

The Colony of New York became a state on July 26, 1788

New York City was chosen to be the nation's first capital and was the site of the inauguration of George Washington as President on April 30, 1789.

Americans established a series of river fortifications along the Highlands. These were Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery at Bear Mountain, Fort Lafayette at Verplanck's Point, Fort Independence in Annsville, Fort Putnam at West Point, Fort Constitution and Stony Point. Those forts were garrisoned by New England soldiers dispersed mostly from Camp Peekskill. Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New York soldiers were stationed at the Peekskill camp for transfer to other forts and military locations.

During the American Revolution, when control of the Hudson River was viewed by the British as strategic to dominating the American territories, Rockland saw skirmishes at Haverstraw, Nyack and Piermont, and significant military engagements at the Battle of Stony Point, where General "Mad" Anthony Wayne earned his nickname. George Washington had headquarters for a time at John Suffern's tavern, the later site of the village of Suffern.

Constitution Island is part of West Point, the United States Military Academy, a National Registered Landmark. The Island is most famous for the Great Chain that was placed across the Hudson during the Revolutionary War and the Warner family who lived on the Island during the 19th century. The Warner House and ruins of the Revolutionary War fortifications are the primary points of interest. The Island's 280 acres are covered with hiking trails that are enjoyed by the Island's visitors. The Constitution Island Association was founded in 1916 to preserve and protect the history and traditions of this unique American site.

American Revolution Documents - Letters by George Washington

The Other New York
Edited by Joseph Tiedemann & Eugene Fingerhut. Subtitled:
The American Revolution beyond New York City, 1763-1787. This is the first comprehensive look at New York State's rural areas during the American Revolution. It is a county-by-county survey that describes the social and cultural conditions on the eve of the Revolution and details the events leading up to the conflict, the battles and campaigns fought within the state, the hardships civilians experienced while creating new local governments and supplying the war effort, and the postwar reconstruction efforts. It also chronicles the impact the war had on the European Americans, Native Americans, and African Americans.
