The Town of Chester was formed in 1845 from parts of the Towns of Blooming Grove, Goshen, Monroe and Warwick. The Village of Chester was incorporated in 1892.

Chester is a village in Orange County. It was named after a location in England. The Village of Chester is primarily located in the northern part of the Town of Chester.

Chester, NY - Faithful Steed - Hambletonian Monument. The monument (shaped like Washington Memorial Monument in DC) about 12?ft high, surrounded by a 2 ft. high wrought iron fence. Located in middle of village on Hambletonian Ave. between two private houses. Monument is grave marker for famed trotter horse "Hambletonian". Definitely off the beaten path, site only known by locals & perhaps a few Hambletonian fans. [Ann D'Agostino, 09/16/2001]
