Location:  Holy Cross Monastery, 1615 Broadway (Route 9W), West Park, NY
Kairos: A Consort of Singers will present Cantata No. 27, Wer weiss, wie nahe mir mein Ende? (Who knows how near my end is to me?), with chamber orchestra.  The concert will also feature a performance of Archangelo Corelli's Violin Sonata Op. 5, No. 3 by violinist Marka Young, cellist Susan Seligman and harpsichoridist Mary Jane Corry. The cantata and instrumental work will be performed as part of a choral evensong service.
Cantata No. 27 was first performed by Bach in Leipzig on October 6, 1726. It is essentially a prayer for a good hour of death, a yearning for death, which brings redemption from the burdens and confusions of this world, and a look forward to a better life after death. It depicts death as the friend of man, for whose coming one should be prepared at all times, awaiting him not with fear but with joy.
