Green Island is a village and a town in Albany County, New York, some 8 miles (13 km.) north of the city of Albany. The population was 2,278 at the 2000 census. The Village of Green Island is also a town, coterminous with the village. Green Island is one of only five such Town-Village amalgams in New York State. The postal code is 12183. The Town of Green Island is also the smallest town (by area) in New York State. The Town of Green Island covers only 0.7 of a square mile (1.8km²}. The largest town by area in the state is the Town of Webb.
