Within an hour from New York City, Sterling Forest links more than 150,000 acres of open space and serves as an important recreational resource to the 26 million people who make the metropolitan area their home. This scenic landscape has been eyed by developers for decades, but since the 1990s, TPL and the Open Space Institute have worked with the community, local groups and state agencies in New York and New Jersey to protect 18,500 acres of this much-desired forest. In December 2000, TPL protected an additional 1,065 acres of interior forest, land that included an environmental education center and a site for a new visitors center
