River Walk - St. Lawrence Cement
St. Lawrence Cement is one of the most highly visible sources of environmental pollution on the Hudson River. It is situated on more than 40 acres in Greenport, NY. Its facilities include 20 other major buildings, including one 38-story tower, eight 23-story structures and two 19-story structures. Its proposed expansions include a 1,200-acre mine and a 406 foot tall smokestack that would emit a plume 6.3 miles long visible 85% of the day during the winter months.

What Happened to the Superfund?
Many Americans are aware that the Bush administration has shifted the tax burden for the federal Superfund from polluting industries to ordinary citizens, and may abandon the program altogether; but New Yorkers may not realize that the state Superfund, a parallel program funded in 1986 with a $1.1 billion bond act, is also dying a slow death, the victim of a three-year legislative impasse between Governor Pataki and the state Assembly.

Barge B35

On May 17, 2005, I received the following email from "Frank" asking questions about Barge B35. His entire email is posted below. After Frank's email is what I found searching the internet. 7 total hits, 6 stories from the Poughkeepsie Journal, and 1 from the USCG, now deleted? At least, not found for now!

Email from Frank.
On April 28, 2005 a Bouchard Barge B35 hit a rock in the Hudson river. It was near New Hamburg and Wappingers Falls, NY. The barge had 3.1 million gallons of gasoline on board. Two of the ten tanks were cut open leaving 20% of the barge load open to the river. As of today, no totals have been given to how much gasoline leaked. News stories have left it that the gasoline evaporated.

The State of New York banned MTBE in gasoline in Jan 2004. The New York DEC has not tested the fuel because they say it should not be in the gasoline. This barge could have been going to another state that does have fuel additives or other additives. Was the gasoline spill catastrophic? Did the Coast Guard test for the additives in the highly volitale gasoline such as MTBE or other additives in the gasoline? Why are they waiting to release the results? Is public water taken from the Hudson River to these communities?

Strange on how these stories are now missing from the Poughkeepsie Journal site.

This link has the following posted:
Front page news on the Poughkeepsie Journal today on the barge that hit Diamond Reef near New Hamburg yesterday afternoon, spilling gasoline into the Hudson. According to the report, the Bouchard Transportation Co. Barge B35 had a capacity of 3.1 million gallons. It was moved to Newburgh for repairs earlier today. Until the ruptured tanks are repaired, the Coast Guard will not know exactly how much gas spilled into the river. http://beacon.blogs.com/beacon_dispatch/2005/04/barge_spills_ga.html
Which in turns points to the Poughkeepsie Journal's missing article.

There seems to be a pattern developing here, don't you think?

To be fair, I went to the Poughkeepsie Journal web site archives and serached for: "B35" and found 4 articles.

1. Crippled barge getting repairs; gas disperses May 1, 2005 •• 368 words •• ID: pgh30854691 NEW HAMBURG -- Repair crews continued work Saturday on the hull of a barge that spilled gasoline into the Hudson River Thursday after apparently striking a reef near New Hamburg. But a Coast Guard official said it would be at least several more days before the exact cause of the accident was determined. The Bouchard Transportation Company Barge B35, propelled by a tugboat, was carrying nearly 75,000 barrels of gasoline when it struck Diamond Reef at 3:40 p.m. Thursday. The barge sustained

2. Boat allegedly didn't heed warning buoy April 30, 2005 •• 1131 words •• ID: pgh30790799 The northbound tugboat that grounded a gasoline-laden barge in the Hudson River near New Hamburg Thursday passed to the wrong side of a warning buoy, according to eyewitnesses and evidence from the damaged barge. The buoys to the south and north of Diamond Reef are colored to indicate vessels should be piloted to the deep and wide channel to the west of the rocky underwater ridge at the mouth of the Wappinger Creek. ''There's a big, red, unmistakable buoy and the ships

3. Tug owner, transport firm cited in 3 local mishaps April 30, 2005 •• 635 words •• ID: pgh30790781 The two companies involved in Thursday's gasoline spill on the Hudson River have accounted for at least three previous incidents locally, according to records at the federal National Response Center and other databases. The tug boat Bruce A. McAllister, owned by McAllister Towing, and Barge B35, owned by Bouchard Transportation Co., apparently ran over the Diamond Reef near New Hamburg. The barge was carrying nearly 75,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline. McAllister is listed as the

4. Barge spills gas into Hudson April 29, 2005 •• 572 words •• ID: pgh30789459 NEW HAMBURG -- A 3.1 million gallon-capacity barge laden with gasoline spilled some of its load into the Hudson River near the mouth of the Wappinger Creek at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday, officials said. A stinging odor of gasoline permeated the air in New Hamburg, strong enough to cause a burning sensation to the eyes and nose. At least two of the barge's 10 tanks ruptured when it scraped over Diamond Reef, also sometimes called Diamond Point, a rocky underwater outcrop near the
