Durham, NY 12422
Local Government
Historic PlacesPoints of InterestDurham, formed from Coxsackie, as Freehold, March 8,1790, changed to the present title in 1805. Parts of Cairo, Windham and Greenville were taken off in 1803. It lies on the northern border line, is one of the best of the agricultural regions and, while not among the mountains, it has a large number of summer residents. There were probably settlers on the lands of the town at an early date, but there was nothing permanent in the way of a settlement until 1782, when a number returned to their former clearings and again took up the work of development. The principal hamlets of this section are: Oak Hill, Durham,
Cornwallville and South and East Durham.
