The east and west branches of the Delaware river meet at
Point Mountain. Atop the mountain is a mosaleum built in the 40's and
now abandoned.
In the 60's, New York route 17 was designated most
scenic highway in the nation. Dozens of natural spring fed lakes dot
the countryside for miles around. A ride along the Delaware toward
Equinunk is very picturesque, as is the ride north to Downsville.
Dramatic rock cuts and tumbling river rapids mark the way. Autumn
foliage peaks the first week of October, and March brings a generous
maple syrup production season.
Summer gardens abound with fruits and vegetables of all
varieties, and area apples are among the sweetest and juiciest in the
world. November brings hords of deer hunters to the area to bag trophy
white tails. Goose, duck, and pheasant hunting are popular in the area.
The Delaware river and the many streams that criss-cross
the countryside are regularly stocked with brook and brown trout.
Winter brings record snowfalls (over 100 inches in 1995), and makes the
skiing terrific. Several ski resorts are within 45 minutes of Hancock.
Snowmobilers have reclaimed the old railroad beds in the area, making
literally hundreds of miles of trails available for that popular sport.
Only 4 hours from New York City, New Jersey and
Philadelphia, the location is convenient, affordable, and sufficiently
isolated to make it a perfect summer or winter vacation retreat.
Accommodations include motels, hunting lodges and bed and breakfact
homes.
