Historic Places

The history of Kingston

Dutch and English Colonization in New England Although the Netherlands only controlled the Hudson River Valley from 1609 until 1664, in that short time, Dutch entrepreneurs established New Netherland, a series of trading posts, towns, and forts up and down the Hudson River that laid the groundwork for towns that still exist today.

Fort Orange, the northernmost of the Dutch outposts, is known today as Albany; New York City's original name was New Amsterdam, and the New Netherland's third major settlement, Wiltwyck, is known today as Kingston.

Unlike New York City and Albany, however, where the traces of colonization can be difficult to find, in Kingston, the history of New York's Dutch colonization is quite evident. Visit the National Park Service.

Academy Green: Statue of Peter Stuyvesant, George Clinton and Henry Hudson

George Clinton Monument: Old Dutch Churchyard, grave site of New York State's first governor and vice president of the United States who served under two presidents.

Kingston Courthouse: 285 Wall Street; Built in 1818, site where New York State's first constitution was adopted and first governor, George Clinton was inaugurated in 1777. Now houses courtrooms and District Attorney's office.

Hurley Village: Rt 209 south; National Historic Landmark - 25 original colonial stone houses

Stockade Area: Originally laid out by Peter Stuyvesant in 1658, now a business district.; Recently refurbished along a turn of the century theme designed by artist John Pike.
