- Albany Institute of History & Art
- 125 Washington Avenue
- Albany, NY 12210
- 518-463-4478
- The majority of the objects in the museum's
collections were either made in the Albany area or New York State, or
were used and owned by documented families living in the Hudson Valley
region. Many objects in the collections have national significance not
only because of Albany's importance during the 18th and 19th centuries
as a center for trade and commerce, but because some of America's most
accomplished artists, craftsmen and customers were living in the Hudson
Valley during this period.
- Empire State Plaza
- Welcome to the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire
State Plaza - one of the most spectacular capital centers in the
country. The Plaza is the seat of government operations for New York
State - it occupies 98 acres of land, with 11,000 employees in 10
buildings. The Plaza exists because of the vision and determination of
one man, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who wanted to create "the most
electrifying capital in the world." To fulfill his purpose, Rockefeller
commissioned Wallace K. Harrison, a personal friend and chief architect
for Rockefeller Center, to be the principal architect for the Plaza.
Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1978.
- Empire State Plaza Tours
- Guided tours of the Empire State Plaza are available
at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. during July and August. Tours are free and last
about one hour. A self-guided
Acoustiguide tour is available year round, Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Tours feature information about the history of the Empire
State Plaza and Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who was the driving
force behind its construction. Highlights include the world-class ESP
Art Collection and stops at various Plaza memorials including the New
York State Vietnam Memorial (the first memorial installed on the Plaza,
1984). The Plaza Visitor Center, (518)474-2418 or by e-mail

- In January 1662, Pieter Bronck entered into a
contract to purchase from the Katskill Indians a tract of land known by
the Indian name "Koixhackung". Choosing a site at the base of the
Kalkberg Ridge, Pieter built his dwelling, a small single room
structure with cellar and storage garret. The original massive beams,
wide floor boards, cellar hatchway, and early Dutch door still dominate
the interior. This house is the oldest surviving dwelling in Upstate
New York.
