PHOENICIA - An early-morning blaze swept through a vacant Main Street
hotel Sunday as firefighters fought to keep it from spreading to
neighboring buildings, a fire official said. Phoenicia Fire Chief Gary
Carr said that the fire erupted at about 12:50 a.m. inside the
Phoenicia Hotel at Main and Church streets on the hamlet's main stretch
that boasts shops, restaurants, and other businesses
Carr said that more than nine fire companies from throughout the area responded to the blaze at the hotel, which was a former hangout for the likes of baseball legend Babe Ruth and Prohibition-era gangster Legs Diamond.
