Poems by Ed Peltz
"A Delhi Re-union"It was raining the day was wet and dreary anticipation and excitement were driving along On the passenger side the small town suffered the rape of time soda shops, drug stores, and the Elm Tree Diner gave up their comfortable friendly space to taverns discount shops and MacDonalds. The old square front stern faced BANK gave way to black top and drive-in windows with a flashing sign for temp and time. Smalleys theater with its markee down eternally sleeping wrapped in its ply-wood casket and large old buildings on corner estates gave birth and made way to spacious used car lots the small white wooden campus buildings were buried under piles of brick that were stacked to sky scraper heights with plate glass windows marble stairs an electronic elevators small foot paths indelibly etched in my mind were crying out for recognition from beneath blacktopped roads edged by tall , stiff , impersonal shopping center lights Greetings were given smiles were flashed hands were shook questions were asked pictures were taken music was played dinners were served speeches were made groups were formed discussions went on about the years that passed and those who are gone "how are you doing ? where have you been ? have you heard about Shirley ? do you know about Jim ? It was sunny , the day was clear and bright renewed friendships and old faces , were driving home , on the passenger side . by Ed Peltz 49-50 |
