Newton Hook – A hamlet in the southwest part of the town by the Hudson River. It was formerly called "Coxsackie Landing" because of the ferry connection to Coxsackie in Greene County across the Hudson River.
Poolsburg – A hamlet in the northwest part of the town by the Hudson River.
Stuyvesant – The hamlet of Stuyvesant, formerly "Stuyvesant Landing" and "Kinderhook Landing," is near the east town line and the Hudson River.
Stuyvesant Falls – A hamlet in the southeast part of the town at Kinderhook Creek. It is named after the waterfall on Kinderhook Creek.
Sunnyside – A hamlet in the east part of the town on Route 9.
Historic Places
Stuyvesant is in the northwest corner of Columbia County, bordered on the north by Rensselaer County, the east by the Town of Kinderhook, the south by Stockport and the west by the Hudson River.
Archaeological evidence demonstrates the Native Americans were in partnership with the land along the river's edge long before Henry Hudson made his exploration in 1609. They fished the river, planted corn and pumpkin. Communication was probably carried out by signal fires built on the shale hill above the waters they named Muhheakunnuk, meaning "great waters or sea-constantly ebbing and flowing."
