- Located fifty-five miles from New York City,
The Town of Warwick has a distinctly rural character with rolling hills
and farmland dotted with red barns and gracious old farmhouses. The
Town of Warwick spans 104 square miles and includes three villages
(Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Warwick) and five hamlets (Amity,
Bellvale, Edenville, New Milford and Pine Island). Each contributes to
the Town's unique quality.
History / Historic Places
The Town of Warwick was formed by act of the State
Legislature on March 7, 1788. The inhabitants of the Town met on the
first Tuesday in April 1789, to elect the first Supervisor, Town Clerk,
Constables and Overseers of the Poor. It was resolved at that first
meeting that the sum of 100 pounds should be raised for the benefit of
the poor and 20 pounds for contingent expenses.
Patrick F. Egan designed the Seal of the Town of
Warwick and it was officially adopted by the Town Board of the Town of
Warwick on October 18, 1971. The Town of Warwick was incorporated in
1789. Spanning 104 square miles, it is the largest Town in Orange
County.
The Town of Warwick retained its original
boundaries until 1845, when the northeast corner was cut off to become
a portion of the newly-formed Town of Chester. It is still one of the
largest towns in area in New York State.
The name "Warwick" was first applied before 1719
to a farm of thousands of acres covering much of this area; and the
designation become so well-known that it was natural to give it to the
town when it was created and also to the village which grew up around
the crossroads near the center of the town.
There are now three incorporated villages –
Warwick (1867), Greenwood Lake (1924) and Florida (1946) – within the
boundaries of the Town of Warwick.

The village was incorporated in 1867. It was
originally a major passenger railroad stop, but in the latter half of
the 20th century, all passenger traffic (except for the occasional
joyride) has been discontinued and has been replaced entirely by
freight. Many of the large colonial houses which were built when the
village began have now been converted to bed and breakfasts, with one
being turned into a bank and another turned into an antique museum.
During the American War for Independence, British General Burgoyne and
his army camped on the outskirts of the village. From
