Autonomous vehicles (AV) sound amazing, don’t they?  A full-size warplane completing missions no pilot could dream of surviving or a fleet of autonomous drones cleaning the oceans of plastic are incredible science fiction tales about to come true.  As a parent, I am hoping that autonomous cars arrive in time to prevent my kids from ever having to learn to drive on their own.  The thought of never having to sit in traffic and, unless you are Will Smith dealing with those stupid NS-5 robots, going on a daily commute would be easy and relaxing.

That stated, and while some autonomous cars are driving today, their remains significant challenges to making these systems work at scale.  It is one thing to enable a single car here or there and quite another to organize thousands of cars at once.  Current approaches are too slow and unequipped to handle these complexities and present a massive challenge to achieving these visions.

Even worse, the internal systems that make these vehicles go are completely insecure and ripe for hacking.  In the past, isolation was the key to protecting our vehicles internals but now, with all of the communication required to enable self-driving vehicles, that isolation is gone.  In its place is…nothing…

The SIMPLE AV overcomes these issues by transforming each vehicle into a highly intelligent and secure autonomous system.  Each system runs off of local policies that determine every action that vehicle can take, and these local systems are focused on secure communication and processing at each step.  SIMPLE AV enables new types of mesh networking that turns traffic into a hive of interactive vehicles that are able to communicate dynamically and enforce multiple levels of directives in real time.

With SIMPLE AV, higher level traffic control systems can determine the speed of traffic to prevent congestion as roads merge together.  More localized control systems can ensure the flow of traffic across multiple lanes while handling incoming and outgoing vehicles.  At the vehicles level, all of these inputs can be merged with real time metrics, existing machine learning and a series of unified sensor readings to determine what the car does, where it is located and how fast it is going.
