SIMPLE Energy

Bear Systems is building on its next generation cybersecurity platform to provide a range of SIMPLE (Secure Integrated ML Platform Leveraging Expertise) solutions for the world’s most pressing needs.  This blog entry is one of a series of introductions showing how Bear can provide a SIMPLE solution for specific vertical challenges.

If you have already read our blog post on CNI, then you might be wondering what else we could possibly be providing in terms of energy.  After all, the SIMPLE CNI protects all of the security and management to overcome critical CNI issues (can you say critical, critical like that?).  SIMPLE Energy, however, is focused on another aspect of Energy and that is the efficient management of smart grids…starting at the level of an individual device.

To understand the challenge, it is important (for us at least) to note that power plants are comprised of a large number of devices.  These devices are both legacy and new and most run their own control systems that may or may not enable disconnected control.  These devices are meant to work in concert in order the drive efficiencies at scale, reduce maintenance downtimes, and ensure employee safety.  As you move up a level, devices transform into systems and systems into plants.  Those plants, in turn, ideally run as components in large grids that, in turn, connect into a higher-level smart grid.

The challenge, therefore, is to make intricate changes to individual equipment across each level based on an incredible number of inputs.  At the high level, inputs such as consumer supply/demand, electrical flow, and government requirements are the main drivers.  At lower levels, physical device health, source fuel inputs, and overall management drivers such as shift work and maintenance are larger drivers.  Thus, while the idea of making high level adjusts based on machine learning (ML)/AI to drive overall smart grids efficiencies at scale sounds great, thus far these top down efforts have failed.

SIMPLE Energy provides a large number of innovations that overcome these challenges through a visual bottom up effort.  The first of these innovations is the ability for SIMPLE Energy to encapsulate domain expertise into reusable components that can then be automated through Robotic Process Automation tasks.  Supporting these efforts is the fact that every single endpoint in a SIMPLE Energy system is comprised of workflow engines that support dynamic behaviors provided in policies.  These blockchain secure policies, delivered over quantum resilient protected lines of communication, enables complex behaviors both within each endpoint as well as across any number of endpoints at any combination of levels of systems.

SIMPLE Energy also provides distributed ML/AI capabilities down to the level of each subsystem all the way up through the highest level of the Smart Grid.  Each level can merge policies down to each device and enforce complex rules for each subsystem up through each plant and grid.  With SIMPLE Energy, a top-level visual management platform can enforce high level rules at the point of each device and system while overcoming vendor disparity and control differences.
